Live on the Levee - Early Arrivals

This is the view from the South Side Bridge. I was crossing over on a Friday afternoon with the sun getting lower in the sky. A few cars were starting to arrive. I stood on the bridge awhile, taking photos when this lone person carrying groceries came strolling by. Perfect timing.  PS: Man, that's a lot of windows.

A Difficult Photo

Based on the hues and chroma that are contained in a painting, getting a good, accurate photo can be difficult at times. This painting is a good example. The entire work has a greenish-yellow cast over it. I wanted to show this un-natural glow as a way to demonstrate the uneasy state that has settled over the coal industry and the people who depend on it. The result, which I'm happy with, has made the photography a real pain in the you-know-what. In person, this painting has a real nice saturated glow to it. Here, online, you'll have to trust me.

An Alley Runs Through It

Why paint a dreary, damp alleyway? I walk past this area every morning. I liked the way the two sun drenched streets blanket the dark, narrow alley.

The Witch's Home

When our girls were small, I used to tell them that this large brick Victorian home in St. Albans, WV was owned by a witch. They would try to look into the windows as we drove by. I've painted this house several times. This is from a photo reference last fall.

East End

Another painting that will be in my show this September. I like the way the low setting sun was casting shadows across this home. I thought the car turned out quite well also.

Scenes from Wilmington, NC

As I post this, our family is vacationing in Wilmington, NC. I was here last spring and took some reference photos. This scene was in the historic district during a horse drawn tour.

My sister's adventure

So, my sister Cathy likes to explore abandon houses she stumbles upon. She discovered this gem earlier in the year and finally convinced my brother and I to go exploring. This house had been empty for quite some time and probably wasn't the safest place to look around in.

For some reason I really connected with the look of this property and managed to shoot a lot of images for upcoming paintings. I really like the dark and light shapes in this composition. It has a nice abstract form to it. My Appalachia Gothic piece was also from the same location.

A neighbor that lives across the street from this home came over and gave us a history of the family that onced lived there. There's a family cemetery in the woods behind the home. Very rural West Virginia.

This will also be in my upcoming show in September.

A Stream Exam

Our family spends a week in Canaan Valley, WV each summer. In addition to hiking, biking, etc., we do a lot of fishing in some of the small lakes. When we stay at our friend Tom Barton's cabin, visit please, we like to gather bait from the small mountain streams in the area. Minnows, crayfish (or crawdads), worms are everywhere to be had. These are my girls and some old man (me), collecting bait.

PS: This painting will be in my September 17th show at the Art Emporium in Charleston, WV.

Appalachia Gothic

2015 has been a busy ride so far. Painting, other than several workshops I've attended, has taken a back seat recently. I've made it through the rough part, now I'm full steam ahead. I have my first one man show this September 17th at the Art Emporium in Charleston, WV. Very exciting. Now I've got a lot of work to do.

This painting is my most recent completed work. Traveling our region this year has really opened my eyes to the plight of many who call West Virginia home.

Redo Larger

When I was doing my "daily painting" blog on a regular basis, one of the small pieces I did (Day 70) was a scene from Canaan. I always liked that composition and intended to paint a larger version (the original was 6" x 6"). So here is that larger version. I really like the way the three dead trees live in this sea of tall grass and wild flowers. This piece will be in my show in September.

Prepping

"Well, Alrighty, then!"

I haven't posted in a while. Time to get busy. I have been painting, just not a lot of notable work to show. Speaking of shows, I have my first one-man-show this September in Charleston, WV at the Art Emporium.  I believe the exact date is Thursday the 17th. It's during Artwalk, so don't forget to put that on your calendars.

Part of my show will be landscapes from my time in Canaan Valley, WV. This first one is near the park entrance, a swollen stream near a hiking trail.
